The urinary mutagenicity of rats fed in vivo with heterocyclic amines (2-amino-3-methylimidazo-1,4-5-r[1,2-a]pyridine; 2-amino-3,3'-dimethylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine, 1-amino-2-methyl-6-phenylimidazo-[4,5-b]pyridine) was studied by means of the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay. The urine of rats given 1-amino-2-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine, a heterocyclic amine present in cooked foods, contained a mutagenic activity (TA98--2.7 mg/l, TA100--1.5 mg/l, TA1535--1.0 mg/l, TA1538--1.8 mg/l). The mutagenic activity was eluted at the same time from the alumina column as the heterocyclic amines and the mutagenicity was not caused by the metabolizing system in the Salmonella strain. When the urine of rats given 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[1,4-5-r[1,2-a]pyridine or 1-amino-2-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine was incubated with liver S-9 fraction, the mutagenic activity was reduced significantly. be359ba680
